The ICON model is developed in collaboration between MPI‐M and the German Weather Service (DWD), and includes several other working groups like e.g. the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ), the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), or the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

This variety of working groups is reflected in a number of different repositories, which are merged in one common repository twice a year.

MPI-M maintains its own repository, icon-mpim.
